Deacon Fred Johnson from Gowanda was ordained in 2005 and had been serving St. Joseph's parish in Gowanda and Msgr. David Garnett Council #15113.
Most of the Brother Knights will remember the call for help that came from our Brothers in Staten Island, NY City, Brooklyn and Queens when Hurricane Sandy hit a few years ago. Many of our Brothers lost their homes and several council buildings were damaged or destroyed. The call went out all over the state of NY for assistance with donations of food, water and clothing.
Deacon Fred had a plan to help make us here in the Buffalo Diocese a part of this effort to assist people in the NY City area affected by Hurricane Sandy. Fred planned to have 3 collection sites in WNY located in the southern tier, just south of Buffalo and in the northern suburbs. Fred received the OK from his company to drive one of their trucks down to the NY City area and they covered the cost of the trip including gas and insurance so that Fred's wife Nancy could ride with him. His last stop before heading to NY was at Our Lady of Hope Council in Kenmore. After loading what was dropped off at our council, his 18 wheeler was just about filled to capacity with food, water and clothing for those in need. All this was done in just a period of 7 days. Fred had made arrangements with the NY State Police so that he had clearance to drive into Staten Island. Once there he made drops at 3 different sites directed by the relief services.
Fred served as a Vice Chairman on the NY State Council's committee on 2nd Responders.
What a great testament to Deacon Fred of his call to service for the diaconate and for the Knights of Columbus. May he rest in peace. Please remember Fred in your prayers as well as his wife Nancy and his children and grandchildren.
